WATERBURY, Vt. (Business Wire) -- Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. (GMCR) (NASDAQ: GMCR) announced today its newest Green Mountain Coffee® Special Reserve offering: Costa Rica Finca El Quizarrá White Honey. A unique “honey washed” process enhances the coffee's sweetness and bright taste, allowing it to exude velvety, concentrated flavors of blood orange and plum. Roasted only on one day, Costa Rica Finca El Quizarrá White Honey Special Reserve will be available while supplies last in 12 oz. bags.

During processing most coffee beans are typically either “washed,” where all fruit layers are removed before the beans are dried, or “natural,” where fruit is left intact in the drying process. In the “honey washed” process, the skin of the coffee cherry is removed, but the thick, honey-like layer that protects the bean is left on. This process results in a bright flavor and subtle sweetness imparted by the natural sugars of the fruit.

“With the popularity of sweet, bright coffees, Costa Rica Finca El Quizarrá White Honey was a natural addition to our Special Reserve collection,” said Lindsey Bolger, Vice President, Coffee at GMCR. “The unique, sweet, and complex flavors of this Special Reserve coffee make it a vibrant offering we're proud to be able to offer.”

Grown on the farm at Finca El Quizarrá in the rich soils between the Poas and Barva volcanoes of Costa Rica, this Special Reserve coffee is made from Caturra and Red Catuai varieties, both known for their exceptional cup quality. Only the most mature cherries are hand-picked for this special harvest and sun dried on open-air patios before being fully dried mechanically in order to obtain precise humidity levels for optimal flavor.

Kenneth Davids, editor of the independent Coffee Review, has awarded this coffee a score of 91. Like wine, coffee is judged on aroma, acidity, body, flavor, and aftertaste on a 100-point scale. Connoisseurs look for a score of 80 or above; a 91 is considered “outstanding”. Coffee Review is one of the most respected and widely read coffee publications in the world.

Green Mountain Coffee Special Reserve coffees are handcrafted and artfully roasted, made from beans that are among the rarest in the world. The brand offers these unique varieties a few times per year as limited edition roasts, available while supplies last. Costa Rica Finca El Quizarrá White Honey is the first Special Reserve to be offered since Colombia Geisha Special Reserve in November 2012.

Costa Rica Finca El Quizarrá White Honey Special Reserve, perfect for any coffee aficionado seeking a unique and delicious coffee experience, will be available online exclusively at www.GreenMountainCoffee.com for $19.49 for a 12-ounce bag. Quantities are limited.
