Steve Schmidt, Office Depot President of International, Named City of Hope 2014 Spirit of Life Award Honoree

09:00 EDT Wednesday, October 30, 2013

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Business Wire) -- Office Depot, Inc. (NYSE:ODP), a leading global provider of office supplies and services, today announced that Steve Schmidt, President of the International Division, and member of the National Office Products Council, has been named the 2014 City of Hope Spirit of Life Honoree.

Schmidt and Office Depot are charged with leading the annual fundraising effort, the 2014 “Connecting Hope” campaign. For decades, the National Office Products Industry has bolstered the search for cures at City of Hope, an innovative biomedical research, treatment and educational institution, and one of only 41 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers.

Fundraising is achieved in a number of ways, including attending and hosting golf outings and special event fundraisers, employee giving, pink product sales and special promotional activities, as well as Foundation and personal giving. In more than 30 years of annual fundraising, the office products group has contributed more than $100 million.

“It is my great privilege and that of my colleagues at Office Depot to be leading the 2014 ‘Connecting Hope' campaign,” said Schmidt. “The Office Products industry is considered the number one industry support group for City of Hope. We have big shoes to fill and lofty expectations, but we have every belief that we'll achieve great success with this year's campaign.”

The Office Depot Foundation, the independent, non-profit foundation that serves as the primary charitable giving arm of Office Depot, has also been a longtime supporter of City of Hope. In 2013, for the eighth consecutive year, the Office Depot Foundation contributed $100,000 in support of City of Hope's Direct Mail Corporate Matching Gift Program. This program has raised more than $4.5 million since 2004.

The Spirit of Life Award is presented to individuals who exemplify the ideals and values that have guided City of Hope for nearly a century, and whose professional and humanitarian accomplishments are worthy of celebration.
