Conifer Health Solutions Supports HIM Expertise, Quality with Gift to American Health Information Management Association Foundation

15:30 EST Wednesday, November 13, 2013

FRISCO, Texas (Business Wire) -- Conifer Health Solutions has provided a $12,000 charitable donation to the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Foundation. The gift will support two scholarship programs for Health Information Management (HIM) students.

“We are pleased to support scholarships that promote advanced education for HIM professionals,” said Paula Lawlor, vice president of Hospital Operations for Conifer Health Solutions. “Value-based care and ICD-10 are bringing major changes to the healthcare industry so the role of the HIM professional will be more important than ever. Conifer Health is proud to support the future quality of the profession.”

Conifer Health has directed $5,000 of the gift to help veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces move to a future in healthcare and become the next generation of HIM professionals. The program provides financial assistance to veterans of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Reserves and National Guard and their spouses. The first award of this scholarship was made Oct. 30 at the 2013 AHIMA Annual Convention & Exhibit in Atlanta.

The remaining $7,000 is directed to fund an annual, merit-based scholarship recognizing a HIM student who exhibits a commitment to service in the community. Conifer Health established the scholarship in 2012 with a total contribution of $35,000 provided over five years, ensuring that the scholarship is available through 2016. Awardees must demonstrate a commitment to community service, particularly service-learning in underserved communities to foster team work in HIM education and civic responsibility.

Betty Wolfe was the 2012 recipient of the community service scholarship. She is currently a student at the College of Southern Nevada.

The AHIMA Foundation annually offers merit scholarships to outstanding, currently enrolled undergraduates in HIM and health information technology (HIT), as well as to professionals pursuing graduate degrees in areas related to health information.

“The AHIMA Foundation is pleased to work with Conifer Health to support deserving Health Information Management students who demonstrate a high civic responsibility through their participation in community service or those who have served our country,” said William Rudman, PhD, RHIA, executive director of the AHIMA Foundation and vice president of Education Visioning for AHIMA. “This generous contribution will provide aid to the most deserving students in our field who demonstrate service to our nation, or community and educational partnerships. For that contribution we are very grateful.”

The next scholarship application will be made available the summer of 2014. For more details about this scholarship go to www.ahimafoundation.org/education/MeritScholarships.
