ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (Business Wire) -- The Western Union Company (NYSE: WU), a leader in global payment services, proudly announces that John David Thompson, Western Union's Executive Vice President, Global Operations & Technology, Chief Information Officer, is a 2014 inductee into the CIO Hall of Fame from IDG's CIO Magazine.

This prestigious honor is bestowed upon a select group of established executives and visionaries that have had significant impact in the field of IT.

“Entrance into the CIO Hall of Fame is the mark of a distinguished, highly respected career in IT, and the men and women chosen for this honor are carefully vetted by our alumni judges,” said Maryfran Johnson, Editor in Chief, CIO Magazine & Events. “Since our first class of honorees in 1997, each new group represents IT leadership at its very best. The six outstanding CIOs chosen this year are transforming businesses with technology, collaborating across the C-Suite, and demonstrating the kind of innovative spirit that inspires us all.”

Mr. Thompson will be honored during a special presentation at the 27th annual CIO 100 Symposium & Awards Ceremony, being held August 17-19, 2014 at the Terranea Resort in Ranch Palos Verdes, California. As part of the symposium, Mr. Thompson will also deliver a keynote presentation.

“On behalf of all Western Union employees worldwide, I would like to congratulate David on his induction into the CIO Hall of Fame,” said Hikmet Ersek, President and CEO of Western Union. “David exemplifies what it means to be passionate and customer-centric in delivering solutions that can help propel our global business forward.”

Mr. Thompson added: “I am honored and privileged to be a part of the 2014 class of inductees for the CIO Hall of Fame. Over the course of my career, I've been able to learn from many exceptional business leaders, who have helped shape my perspective on the impact that information technology can have on corporate strategy and evolution. While the induction is in recognition of my work to date, I also look forward to the future, as we work to support Western Union's continued success in the international money transfer marketplace.”
