Penske, Shell and the Common Ground Alliance Reprise and Grow Safe Digging Awareness Program for 2014

09:00 EDT Wednesday, April 02, 2014

Fans can "Fly Away to Phoenix" to see the 811 logo on No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Fusion in person

HOUSTON, April 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Yet again, Shell and the Common Ground Alliance will work to raise awareness for 811, the national "Call Before You Dig" hotline at several races this year. The No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Fusion car will sport the 811 logo at all three races during National Safe Digging Month in April, as well as races in Bristol, TN on August 23 and Phoenix on November 9, and the All-Star Race in Charlotte on May 17.

"Team Penske is pleased to be continuing our work with Shell around safe digging education," said Roger Penske. "We have collectively made a lot of progress together, but we still feel it is important to reinforce each year that people should call 811 before beginning any digging projects ? even planting small trees or shrubs."

"This is the sixth year that Shell has leveraged our presence in racing to raise awareness for the 811 hotline during National Safe Digging Month, and we're pleased that every year the Common Ground Alliance sees an increase in calls in April," said Greg Smith, President, SPC "The next step from our perspective is making sure that people understand exactly how and when they need to use the hotline ? it's not just for landscapers or firms conducting large scale projects. Everybody is required to call 811, even if they're just digging in their own yards."

As part of the ongoing educational effort, the Common Ground Alliance will give one race fan the chance for a weekend of a lifetime with the "Fly Away to Phoenix" sweepstakes. One lucky fan and a guest will win a grand prize trip to the Quicken Loans 400 at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, AZ on November 9, 2014 to watch Joey Logano carry the Call 811 logo on the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Fusion car up close and in person. Fans can enter at www.flyawaytophoenix.com. No purchase necessary. Sweepstakes ends August 31, 2014.
