Lockheed Martin Integrates Cyber Security Standards Into Open Source Platform for Automated Sharing

08:30 EDT Thursday, May 08, 2014

GAITHERSBURG, Md., May 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) announced its successful integration of the latest cyber security standards into an open source software platform. The capability enables the unique and automated sharing of cyber threat indicators and malware between organizations and cyber sensors. This translates into faster machine-to-machine sharing of information at speeds up to 40Gb/second with minimal latency.

In partnership with the Open Information Security Foundation (OISF), Lockheed Martin engineers integrated the latest cyber threat communications standards into OISF's Suricata Engine, an open source intrusion detection and intrusion prevention system (IDS/IPS). This integration extends Suricata's robust capabilities to leverage cross-organization data sharing to communicate cyber threat information directly to the Suricata cyber sensor.

"OISF is excited to welcome Lockheed Martin into the consortium. Our collaboration is already well underway to build several very exciting new features into Suricata to ensure yet another great set of tools in the network defenders arsenal," said Kelley Misata, vice president of community outreach for OISF.

OISF is a non-profit foundation organized to build a new generation IDS/IPS to meet the growing threats that organizations like Lockheed Martin face every day. OISF remains on the leading edge of open source IDS/IPS development through its multi-national community of software development experts, leading cyber security companies, and members of the open source security community committed to identifying current and future needs.

"Lockheed Martin is a key contributor to evolving and integrating emerging TAXII, STIX, and CybOX standards which are being widely adopted across the industry. In fact, the STIX format already leverages the Lockheed Martin Cyber Kill Chain to enhance the context of specific threat indicators.  Our commitment to innovation allows us to continually integrate new solutions to keep our nation's critical infrastructure protected from adversaries," said Rohan Amin, director of Cyber and Data Analytics, Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Solutions.

The result of Lockheed Martin's work with OISF and the Suricata technology is an effective and flexible solution that enhances the current TAXII, STIX, and CybOX baselines for a capability that Lockheed Martin will put to test on its own networks.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs approximately 113,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation's net sales for 2013 were $45.4 billion.
