Financial literacy

On Monday June 22, 2015, Report on Business reporter Jacqueline Nelson and personal finance columnist Rob Carrick were on Facebook for a live online discussion on the topic of financial literacy. Teachers, parents and all financially curious Canadians, had a chance to ask them anything - about money.

To look at that discussion, check out the Globe's Facebook page.

Ms. Nelson's weekend story in the ROB looked at how financially prepared the children of Gen Y are - or aren't - for a digital world. Research shows Canada isn't doing enough to prevent young people from making costly financial mistakes. They have more resources to help them learn about money than ever before, from websites to apps, but getting kids to care about how much they spend and save can be a tall order.

In a separate story - Death by boredom - Mr. Carrick spoke with finance professor Moshe Milevsky about the problem of teaching financial literacy to kids, who are turned off by the topic. With the recent introduction of the federal government's financial literacy strategy, now is the time to start having this discussion.
