Alan Lysaght's tips for finding the best bank for you:

1. Know what you need: Free checking? Branch locations? ATM access? Customer service? Know yourself and choose the package and place that is best for you.

2. Look out for baggage: Before committing, make sure you're aware of any potential catches, such as account charges, interest rates, ATM fees and minimum account balances.

3. Don't get sucked in by give-aways : Sometimes you can win an Ipod by bringing your mortgage or business over to them. Whatever it is they are offering to give you for free, you will pay more than double that in fees and charges.

4. Don't be afraid to switch to another bank if you can get a better deal. Before you switch, ask if there is an exit fee or a cost to transferring your money. If there is, check to see if your new bank will cover it.
