Maple Leaf Foods Inc. announced Wednesday that former vice-chairman and lead director Purdy Crawford has been appointed to serve as the company’s non-executive chairman over the next several months.

Mr. Crawford is filling a position long held by the late Wallace McCain, who died May 13.

“The appointment of Mr. Crawford to the chairmanship ensures continuity of leadership at the board,” Maple Leaf said in a statement.

Mr. Crawford, who will be retiring from the board by the company’s next annual meeting in April, 2012, will serve as chairman until the annual meeting or such earlier time as determined by the board, the company said.

Meanwhile, a committee comprised of four independent directors, with Chaviva Hosek as chair, has been appointed to review and make recommendations to the full board on the position of chairman on an ongoing basis.

Maple Leaf Foods, a leading food processing company, headquartered in Toronto, employs some 21,000 people at its operations across Canada and in the United States, the United Kingdom and Asia. It has annual sales of some $5-billion.
