The Canadian Press

Shaw Communications SJR.B-T has picked Nokia Siemens Networks NOK-N as the provider of key equipment for its forthcoming wireless division.

The media giant says Nokia will provide both the radio access network and core equipment for the operations, though it didn't provide details of the financial agreement.

Nokia Siemens “has considerable experience in deploying state-of-the-art wireless networks in Canada, and has been a world leader in developing third-generation and Long Term Evolution technology,” the company said.

“The equipment from (Nokia Siemens) will be fully 3G and LTE capable, giving Shaw a variety of options to deliver broadband wireless services to customers.”

Shaw spent $190 million on wireless licenses nearly two years ago, when Ottawa allowed new entrants into the wireless industry, but the company has kept most of its plans under wraps.

The company said side it plans to launch the long-awaited wireless business in late 2011.
