Technology licensing company Wi-LAN Inc. reported Tuesday a second-quarter net loss of $5.9-million that widened from year-ago $1.3-million, as its litigation expenses rose to $6.8-million from $4-million.

Wi-LAN, which derives its revenues by licensing intellectual property and defending it in court, said its loss amounted to six cents per share, compared with a loss of one cent per share in the prior-year period.

The company noted that its results for the most recent quarter ended June 30 were compared with the period ended July 30, 2009 as it adjusted its fiscal year.

Revenues rose to $11.8-million from $9.6-million.

The company declared a 1.25 cent per share dividend, payable Oct. 6 to shareholders of record on Sept. 15.

Wi-LAN also said it continues to expect 2010 revenues between $43-million and $47-million.
