Editor-in-Chief John Stackhouse answers your questions about Globe Unlimited Add to ...

We’ve launched a new chapter in Globe and Mail publishing, offering online readers an option to pay for unlimited access to our content, a new tier of subscriber-only journalism and state-of-the-art navigation to control the kind of Globe content you receive, when you want it.

All about Globe Unlimited

We’ll continue to develop our digital offerings, along with the newspaper, in the belief our readers want access to Globe journalism on all our platforms. Since we announced details of Globe Unlimited last week, many of those readers have asked a range of thoughtful questions. Here are some of the most common concerns sent to me, and our response:

Q: I am a believer that paywalls are essential to support good journalism. With that said, the price point that you have chosen seems high in comparison to other reputable media outlets with paywalls. What factors went into choosing $20/month as the price point?

– Ian Goode, Kingston, Ont.

John Stackhouse: Paywalls are a growing trend in the world of journalism – hundreds have been introduced around the world in the past couple of years. The Globe spent the past 18 months conducting extensive research and focus groups with readers, subscribers and other leading newspapers, to understand the value of The Globe’s products, content and journalism.

Q: Does “a range of new, exclusive journalism and insights” mean new writers, photographers, artists, other types of journalists, that we will not get in the printed paper (which we happily pay for)? Will there be more/better videos, and will we still have to watch commercials before the “editorial” content comes to life?

– Brian Kilgore, Toronto

John Stackhouse: We’ve hired new reporters in key areas, especially business and Canadian politics, and will continue to add to our newsroom. Among others, we’ve added veteran journalists Sean Silcoff and Sophie Cousineau, former Bay Street analyst Scott Barlow and new staff to our ROB Insight feature, which is for subscribers only. Great point on video. We’ve beefed up our team, and this month hired our first full-time video host, Hannah Sung. You can see her every day on our site, talking about the best of our journalism.

Q: Will print subscribers (six days a week) continue to be able to post comments below news stories? Similarly, I am assuming that non-print people will no longer be able to post comments?

– Roger Stonebanks, Victoria

John Stackhouse: Anyone can post a comment to a news story by logging in with a username and password at globeandmail.com. Readers who do not have a subscription can access up to 10 free articles each month and will have unlimited commenting ability on those articles.

Q: How do you plan to deal with those of us who are outside of delivery areas and who buy the paper each day as well as read online?

– Philip Griffin-Allwood, Hampton, N.B.

John Stackhouse: We regret that we cannot offer a discounted Globe Unlimited subscription to readers who purchase single copies of the newspaper _ even if they purchase the newspaper every day. Some readers who live outside our delivery area have chosen to subscribe to Globe2Go, our daily e-paper. In the near future, we will provide discounted Globe Unlimited subscriptions to Globe2Go subscribers.

Q: I am quite disappointed that The Globe and Mail has chosen this route. With so much information online, what makes you think people will be loyal to you? To be honest, I subscribe to the weekend paper but when Oct. 22 comes, that will be cancelled. I have enough costs in my life and I certainly don’t need another one.

– Ryan Heelis, Kitchener, Ont.

John Stackhouse: The price is in line with what we’ve long charged for The Globe and Mail, and it’s in the same range as most quality publications. Don’t think of it as just online information, however. We’ve launched navigation tools on our site that will make it easier for readers to stay on top of the information deluge, and customize The Globe to your liking – in other words, to create a daily Globe that works for you. I hope you will take the opportunity to try Globe Unlimited for the first month for 99 cents to get a better sense of the value it may offer you. We welcome additional feedback after you’ve had a chance to try it out.

Q: I am an existing GlobePlus subscriber with two daughters in university. Are you contemplating family access? Thank you.

– Gord Hall, Collingwood, Ont.

John Stackhouse: Yes, we are currently working to provide family access, student discounts, new products and updates. We will roll out enhancements and updates as they’re available.

Q: What makes you think your content is as valuable to readers as the New York Times?

– Stephen Zwir, Toronto

John Stackhouse: The Globe produces quality, award-winning content and has continued to invest in technology including improved video capabilities and state-of-the-art printing presses; we’re investing in our journalists and increasing our presence around the world. We’ve received numerous journalism awards, including two Emmys recognizing our multimedia work, nine Michener Awards for public-service journalism and more National Newspaper Awards than any other newspaper in Canada. Our agenda-setting news and special features, including The Globe’s ongoing Our Time to Lead series, attack the issues that matter most to Canadians.

Q: Will the new online subscription contain the Fraser Simpson version of the Saturday cryptic crossword? It was previously only available in the print version.

– Alison Burnham, Oakville, Ont.

John Stackhouse: Fraser Simpson’s crossword will continue to be available in print as it is now and will not be available online. We do have another cryptic crossword available online.

Q: As a print subscriber, will we be able to access Globe Unlimited on our desktop and tablets?

– Jack and Sylvia Vicq, Saskatoon

John Stackhouse: Yes. If you are a five- or six-day-a-week print subscriber, you will get unlimited digital access for free. Friday, Saturday and Saturday-only print newspaper subscribers also receive a discount, and will pay $4.99 (plus applicable taxes) per month.

Q: Will Globe2Go subscribers have free access to Globe Unlimited?

– Andrew Benedetto, Toronto

John Stackhouse: In the near future, we will provide significantly discounted Globe Unlimited subscriptions to Globe2Go subscribers. We will notify you of the changes and preferential pricing as soon as these details are available.

Q: Will GlobePlus still be available? If so, what’s the difference?

– Mary Ries

John Stackhouse: Yes, we will continue to offer both GlobePlus and Globe Unlimited. They are two different products. GlobePlus includes access to three Globe and Mail products:

  • Globe E-edition – the electronic version of the daily print edition of The Globe and Mail newspaper;
  • GlobeInvestorGold – the most comprehensive Canadian financial website with access to financial databases, a portfolio tracker, news alerts, advice and insight from experts, and more;
  • Globe Archives – access to up to 100 Globe and Mail articles per month from Globe archives dating back to January 1, 2000.

Globe Unlimited includes:

  • Unlimited access to Globe content, seamlessly across all platforms and devices;
  • an early version of Dashboard, a new personalization tool that allows you to create customized news feeds, save topics from breaking news, to specific companies and stocks – and more;
  • exclusive subscriber-only content including Streetwise, which provides up-to-the-minute developments and news from the financial markets;
  • ROB Insight, comment and analysis on the top business stories of the day, starting in the early morning and throughout the day.

Additional new subscriber-only features and tools will be introduced over time.
