SON OF STITCH 'N' BITCH:

45 PROJECTS TO KNIT

& CROCHET FOR MEN

By Debbie Stoller, $19.95

ISBN 13: 978-0761146179

We've often thought that Pete Doherty could have a real shot as a musician if only he stayed away from the drugs. In an effort to get him on the right track (heh heh), we are currently seeking other ways to keep his hands busy.

How about Son of Stitch 'N' Bitch: 45 Projects to Knit & Crochet for Men (Workman Publishing)? We know what you're thinking, boys: "Me knitting? As if."

Think again. Debbie Stoller, a self-described "knitting superstar" from New York, knows her audience - and there's no cheesy wares in sight.

Also the creator/editor-in-chief of the feminist magazine Bust, Stoller published the first book in her popular Stitch 'N' Bitch series in 2003. Two others followed, along with a series of branded items such as journals.

With its kitschy retro styling and off-the-wall projects, the series was an instant hit with hipster ladies, but the guys were left out in the cold, until now.

The 215-page book features non-embarrassing guy-friendly projects such as a scarf with an image of the Brooklyn Bridge, funky neon socks, ties emblazoned with robots, cute-yet-manly steering-wheel cozies (!) and genius "beer gloves" (those cold cans can be a real buzz kill).

And if you've always envied the jazzy bird-of-paradise fashion sensibility of Sesame Street's

Ernie, there's a sweater in here with your name on it.

If you're a beginner, fear not: Easy-to-read charts help to explain the process for each item step by step.

So go for it, guys. Girls are bound to be impressed. And ladies, this might be the Christmas gift that gets your man to step away from the Wii.

But no beer gloves for you, Pete.
