The Greedy Pig
307 W. Cordova St., Vancouver
604-669-4991
The Greedy Pig popped up about two months ago in one of Vancouver's hippest areas - its neighbours are chic fashion boutiques and other achingly cool dining establishments.
Yet despite its trendy postal code, it's one of those places most people will have to stumble across the first time before making it a destination thereafter.
The eclectic space is dark but with super-high ceilings so you never feel caged in. A fireplace and warm wood bar give it a cozy amb ience.
Chef Sean Sylvestre's (formerly of Cioppino's) diminutive dinner menu includes charcuterie and savoury spreads, as well as tasty san dwiches, such as a yummy pulled pork with apple and fennel slaw.
Word of the room's bourbon-heavy drink menu, designed by bar star Nick Devine (also of Cascade Room), took less than a month to spre ad to the city's cocktail cognoscenti, even though owners Allison and Cameron McKinnon did little to nothing to promote it.
The McKinnons hail from Saskatoon, ergo a Saskatchewan-inspired rye cocktail called the Roughrider, which has become a hit with ladi es. A well-edited by-the-glass wine list tops out with a 2006 Caymus Conundrum White Blend for just $12.
Pretentiousness, in any form, is decidedly not on the menu.
THE ROUGHRIDER
1and one half ounces Wiser's Whisky
1 ounce pureed black raspberries
One half ounce Chambord
One half ounce fresh lime juice
Ginger beer
Muddle all ingredients and pour into tall glass. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with wedge of lemon and a blueberry laid over rim of glass.
