'They're kind of like Barack Obama," says Jason Trotzuk, designer and founder of Vancouver-based Fidelity Denim. "It's change! A breath of fresh air!"
Trotzuk is talking about his latest design, the Scoop skinny jeans, recently launched in a rainbow of new colours - 14, to be exact.
"We've seen so much blue denim that I thought it was time to brighten the mood, be spontaneous and get downright crazy."
The Scoop, which retails for $140, is the latest style to hit the colourful-denim market. Diesel and smaller brands such as Kerrigan, Blank, Mavi and Roxy have also jumped on the colour bandwagon.
"For a long time, denim was the anchor for an outfit and your top was the showpiece," Trotzuk says. "Now, with the new colourful skinny, the focus changes to the jeans."
Of course, every change requires some adaptation. For those diving into brights for the first time, Vancouver stylist Leila Bani recommends pairing them with neutral tops. Trotzuk says one of his favourite looks is when the jeans are worn cuffed with a simple pair of flip-flops.
For those who want colour on colour, "grey looks modern and I also love violet," Bani says. "Both are easy to work with and complement most skin tones."
"Neons and pastels are a bit trickier, but can still be lots of fun." The key to pulling off the look? "Avoid embellishments or contrast stitching."
Trotzuk goes way more saturated.
"A red tank or camisole with the yellow Sunflower pants is a great, splashy combo. I'm a big fan of the bright colours that you thought you'd never wear."
