Toronto food maven Trish Magwood is the recipient of a 2008 James Beard Foundation award for her recent book Dish Entertains: Everyday Simple to Special Occasions (HarperCollins Canada).

Ms. Magwood, who travelled to New York this month to attend the food awards gala at Lincoln Center, owns Dish Cooking Studio. The 37-year-old mother of two (about to be three) also hosts the Food Network's Party Dish, a show about entertaining.

"It was quite surreal," Ms. Magwood said of her win. "I had no expectations; my husband and I went for the fun of it. It was really an excuse to visit my favourite city in the world."

Dish Entertains is filled with photos of Ms. Magwood's family, friends and colleagues, as well as easy-to-follow recipes and ideas for casual and formal entertaining. The book won in the Entertaining category.
