Takin' it to the streets

From Tuesday's Globe and Mail

Sharon Mahoney, a street performer who has participated in prestigious festivals such as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, got her start years ago with a 10 minute set on Granville Island. This summer, she is back, boasting an hour time slot. Her act features such characters as passive-aggressive Sharon from Canada, poking fun at what good Canadians want to be - patriotic, apologetic and politically correct. Later she transforms into Tallulah, the Clumsy Dominatrix. Though sometimes street performers are looked down upon by others in the entertainment industry, she says, "I love my job... I get to travel all over the world and I make a living solely off of doing this and I think that's pretty amazing."

"There has always got to be an honesty about the character. It's basically a very real part of you that's amplified."Sharon Mahoney, street performer
