Travel Tip: Map Scarves

Globe and Mail Update

Anyone who thinks travel is glamorous has probably never left the comfort of her own city. Long-haul flights, hotel toiletries and errant weather wreak havoc on many an attempt to exude chic. Add in the telltale tourist move of struggling to fold your map, and it's impossible not to stick out when all you want to do is blend in with the fashionable locals.

But what if you wore the map of the city you were visiting? Tied around your neck or knotted to your handbag. No, not the unwieldy paper kind — then you'd really look ridiculous. Picture a lovely silk scarf with a map printed on it.

A tool that worked well for British aircrews in the Second World War, map scarves are durable, add warmth on a cold day (or help shade your from the sun) and can be whipped off and consulted without drawing stares. Now about those toiletries …

Available for London, Paris, Rome, Venice, Vienna, Berlin, New York, San Francisco, and Washington at www.mapsquares.com. Classic scarf (33 inches square), $65 (U.S.); neck square (21 inches square), $30.
