McGill University researchers say they have cracked the genetic code of the Quebec strain of C.difficile, which causes severe diarrhea.
They say it's the first time in North America that the genetic code of the strain has been cracked.
McGill researchers say the discovery will allow them to improve detection, treatment and prevention strategies.
They also say the particular strain is responsible for most of the outbreaks in the province and for similar outbreaks in the United States and parts of Europe.
McGill professor Ken Dewar said the search can now begin for other toxins and antibiotic resistant genes that will allow researchers to better understand why this particular strain causes severe disease.
Mr. Dewar said the breakthrough was achieved using technology from the United States.
