In these frugal times, it would be handy to have some sewing skills. Like Saskatchewan's own Roxanne Daku, who started making her one-of-a-kind Scüubetti handbags out of a sheer love of collecting vintage fabric from family members, thrift shops and even recycling bins. Somehow she thought she'd put them to use someday.
Inspiration struck when she decided that one piece in particular would make a great bag, and voilà, Scübetti was born. Daku's designs are all made from salvaged material; she turns everything from old suit jackets to tablecloths and curtains into stylish polka dotted wallets or houndstooth messenger bags. Daku even reuses old belt buckles to embellish her purses.
It's good to know that someone out there still knows how to run a sewing machine and make you look like the thrifty diva you know you are. From about $13 for the Lil' Scübetti wallet to $80 for a messenger bag. Custom orders available through www.scubetti.etsy.com.
