“There are only two things I love: playing right field for the Toronto Blue Jays, and feminism.”
That’s the tagline for the new Tumblr site Feminist Jose Bautista, which launched last week, giving Bautista a say on equal pay and rape culture.
The page, which was created by an anonymous user (no, not Bautista) on July 3, layers text over photos of Bautista mid-game. “Just because they let you get to third base, don’t assume they’ll take you home” appears with a shot of the Jays outfielder rounding a base. In another, Bautista holds a bat with a line that reads, “I’ve dented roofs and cracked windows with my home runs. But I’d rather shatter the glass ceiling.” There’s also: “As long as women earn 77 cents for every dollar a man earns, I can’t be too upset that A-Rod makes twice as much as me.” It’s a clever pairing of two unlikely subjects.
It seems Jose is taking the job from Feminist Ryan Gosling. That Tumblr account used sulking photos of the Canadian actor paired with feminist phrases, generating thousands of page views and eventually a spinoff Feminist Ryan Gosling book. Since the announcement of the book, the site has mostly stopped publishing.
But that’s okay as long as Feminist Jose Bautista keeps delivering gems like this one. “If a pitcher throws me a garbage pitch, I’ll yell to him, ‘Hey, you throw like a girl, or a boy, who isn’t good at baseball.’”
