Rapper M.I.A. and former fiancé Benjamin Bronfman are engaged in an ugly custody battle over their four-year-old son.
As reported by the New York Post’s Page Six column, M.I.A. (real name Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam) was recently banned from taking her son with Bronfman, four-year-old Ikhyd, back to her birthplace of England. The musician was born in London and raised in Sri Lanka.
According to The Post, Bronfman, the environmentalist son of billionaire Edgar Bronfman Jr., had obtained a restraining order to prevent M.I.A. from leaving the country with their son.
A source told Page Six: “M.I.A. has been texting and calling Ben, saying she will take their son to London, even though they both live in Brooklyn and the child goes to school there.”
M.I.A. was reportedly served with the legal paperwork on Wednesday. The same day, she posted a series of since-deleted comments on Twitter in which she accuses Bronfman of trying to take her child away.
Among other tweets, M.I.A. wrote, “BEN you can’t take my son away from me…Just because you have money doesn’t mean you have the right…” She also posted the comment, “THE BRONFMANS WANT TO TAKE MY CHILD AWAY FROM ME. WHAT KIND OF S–IS THAT? THEY NEVER SEE HIM,” and later added, “Every child needs the MOTHER, I GREW UP WITHOUT A DAD.”
New York-born Bronfman, 30, is the great-grandson of the late Samuel Bronfman, founder of the Seagram distillery empire that was headquartered in Montreal.Report Typo/Error
