Attorneys for singer Chris Brown and prosecutors have been unable to reach a plea agreement in his assault case in Washington.

Prosecutor Kevin Chambers said Wednesday they offered a deal for Brown to plead guilty to simple assault and time served. But the Grammy-winning singer's attorney, Mark Geragos, says defence lawyers and prosecutors couldn't agree on a statement of facts about what happened in October outside the W hotel.

A fan says Brown hit him after he tried to get in a photograph the singer was taking with two women. At the time of his arrest, Brown was on probation for a 2009 attack on singer Rihanna, his then girlfriend.

Brown was in court Wednesday, wearing jeans, a leather jacket and a tie. His trial was scheduled for Sept. 8.
