Singer Katy Perry has responded to the death of a Toronto teen whose cover of her song Roar went viral earlier this fall.

The pop star took to Twitter late Monday to respond to the passing of Olivia Wise, 16, who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour two years ago.

Perry's tweet: "Olivia Wise. I can hear you singing with the angels now. Your spirit & strength has inspired me & so many others. May you rest in peace."

Wise's cover of Perry's inspirational hit Roar was recorded at a Toronto music studio in early September and was filmed for posterity.

Although Wise's version of the song was intended as a keepsake for family and friends, the video went viral and quickly garnered more than a million hits on YouTube. Among the viewers was Perry, who made her own video to praise Wise's interpretation of the song.

Said Perry in the video: "It was very moving and it sounded great. I love you, a lot of people love you, and that's why your video got to me, and it moved everybody that saw it. Thank you so much. Keep roaring."

Perry's video also included a link to a fund established in Wise's name to raise money for brain tumour research.
