No matter what you may have thought of the How I Met Your Mother finale (and reaction, even within The Globe and Mail, has been mixed), the man who co-created and ran the series for the past nine seasons thought it was just swell.
He has, though, been been tweeting like a nervous teenager in recent days.
As pointed out by Deadline, Craig Thomas, who conceived the CBS sitcom with writing partner Carter Bays, has been firing off tweets in rapid succession since Monday, the same day HIMYM aired its hour-long series wrap up.
The dizzying Thomas tweetathon kicked off in the afternoon, when the writer issued the innocuous comment, “Thanks to every single person who ever watched HIMYM.”
Which he followed a minute later with the gracious, “Thanks to every single person who ever worked on HIMYM.” Aw, that’s nice.
Which Thomas followed with, “Thanks to everyone at 20th Century Fox TV and at CBS who ever bet big on HIMYM.”
And then: “Thanks to Carter Bays for being my writing partner and best friend through all this.”
And then: “Thanks to our wives, Rebecca and Denise, for putting up with us working ourselves to the bone and supporting us nonetheless.”
And then: “Thanks for not only keeping us on TV but allowing us to become better, deeper writers and try things that sometimes scared us.”
Which was the last tweet Thomas sent out before the airing of the finale episode.
As even non-HIMYM viewers now know, the finale had Ted (Josh Radnor) finally meeting the mother of his children – Tracy McConnell – and then revealed that she died six years later.
Toward the cause of a happy ending, Ted ends up reunited with the other love of his life: Robin (Cobie Smulders), which naturally meets with his kids’ approval in the series’ final moments.
Yesterday, Thomas went back on Twitter, seemingly to gauge reaction and, of course, keep thanking people.
His first post-finale tweet: “Thank you all. I mean it: Every possibly reaction to the last 44 minutes…thank you all…”
Three minutes later, Thomas tweeted, “We wrote a comedy with dramatic elements till the very end. Thanks for taking that ride with us.”
Two minutes later: “Seriously – no matter what you thought of tonight, THANK YOU… you were with us. We love you.”
Which Thomas followed with: “We did a finale about life’s twists and turns and that is not always what happens…but THANKS.”
And finally: “Thanks for this ride.”
