ZITS AND ALL
Teen singer Lorde is keeping it real by sharing a decidedly unglamorous picture of herself with fans. On Monday, the 17-year-old Royals singer posted an Instagram picture showing her with no makeup. The caption: “in bed in paris with my acne cream on.” In the photo, the Grammy-winning singer has her hair pulled back in a bun and blemish-treatment cream is clearly visible on her chin and cheeks. Last month, there was speculation that the New Zealand-born pop star really wasn’t 17, but rather a grown-up pretending to be a teenager. When Vanity Fair asked Lorde about the rumours last month, she quipped, “Hi, I’m Ella and I’m actually 45.”

Pop star Bruno Mars and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres joined forces to pull off a prank on an unsuspecting nurse. On Wednesday’s appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Mars showed up early and requested a nurse for unspecified throat issues. When the nurse showed up, Mars took instructions via a hidden earpiece on what to say and do. Obviously, the instructions were nonsensical, and included Mars telling the nurse that, “What hurts the most is when I go ‘beep, beep, beep’ like a truck backing up.” Somehow, Mars was able to keep a straight face throughout the prank and the nurse laughed at her own bewildered response when he told her about the gag.
THE BIG CHOP
Stop the presses: Taylor Swift got a haircut. The country singer returned to the U.S. yesterday following her U.K. concert tour and fans were immediately talking about her new shorter hairstyle. On a video posted to Instagram on Monday, Swift is shown getting her hair chopped while seated in a crowded room of fans. You can also hear Swift’s voice saying, “This is how many people are watching me get a haircut right now… We don’t do anything without an audience, do we?” Swift also posted a picture of her new look on her Facebook page with the comment, “London, I could never thank you enough. See you next time! PS: short hair, don’t care.”
Don’t bother looking for artwork featuring Justin Bieber at the Indianapolis International Airport. The facility recently hired local artist Tre Reising to create an art display to liven up one of the airport concourses. An airport official said they expected a display showcasing the worlds of hip hop music and art. Instead, Reising used multicolour letters to spell out the word “Belieber,” which of course has become the Canadian pop star’s social-media tagline. An airport official says plans to feature the display in the concourse have been shelved, but Reising will still receive his prearranged fee of $500 (U.S.).

TAKING A BREAK
Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau plans on taking a hiatus from the cartoon strip in the near future. On Tuesday, Trudeau announced that he will stop writing and drawing the irreverent daily strip in order to devote more energy to Alpha House, an Amazon web series that he created last year. “The comics were once an enormously influential part of the cultural conversation,” said Trudeau, “but now it’s streaming video that’s a leading edge. We all have to adapt.” Available on Amazon’s Instant Video service, Alpha House follows the fictional misadventures of four U.S. congressmen sharing a house in Washington, D.C.
