ACTING CLASS

Now it can be told: Meryl Streep’s insecurity about her looks almost stopped her from becoming an actress. The three-time Oscar-winner made the startling admission while accepting an honorary doctorate from Indiana University this week. “I was always in plays, but I thought it was vain to be an actress,” said the 64-year-old screen veteran. “Plus, I thought I was too ugly to be an actress. Glasses weren’t fabulous then.” Streep also dispensed some sage advice for aspiring thespians: “What makes you different or weird, that’s your strength. Everyone tries to look a cookie-cutter kind of way, and actually the people who look different are the ones who get picked up. I used to hate my nose. Now I don’t. It’s okay.”

If comedian Louis C.K. looks uncomfortable on his FX sitcom Louie or while performing standup, he’s just trying to be funny. The comedian comes clean about his offbeat method in the upcoming May issue of GQ. In the interview, C.K. says he routinely puts himself in awkward situations in order to learn more about himself. “You’ve got to embrace discomfort,” he said. “It’s the only way you can put yourself in situations where you can learn, and the only way you can keep your senses fresh once you’re in there.” By way of example, C.K. recalled the time when he sat with bussed-in African-American children at his mostly white junior high school in Boston. “It was awkward and scary, but I made a lot of black friends, and that was the only way to do it. It had to be uncomfortable.”
