REYNOLDS WRAP

Ryan Reynolds’s latest film may have been met with a less-than-warm reception at Cannes, but he’s still the cover boy for Hello! Canada’s list of Most Beautiful Canadians.

The Green Lantern star’s face fronts the magazine’s annual roundup of attractive Canucks. To be clear, the 37-year-old actor was not the winner of the faux competition, but at least he has some good news to end what must have been a difficult week.

Earlier this week, Reynolds was at the Cannes Film Festival to promote his newest film The Captive, which was directed by Atom Egoyan – it was greeted by boos from some attendees at a press screening.

Which means Reynolds should be cheered slightly for having his unshaven mug on the face of Hello! The magazine’s editors explain the decision to put his face on the cover via gushing copy inside.

“Gracing the cover of HELLO! Canada’s 50 Most Beautiful is Vancouver native Ryan Reynolds. It’s not just about his screen-idol looks and sublime style; the self-deprecating actor is the full package with his charming personality and his dedication to giving back to those in need. With five movies in the pipeline, there is no doubt that 2014 will be the year of Ryan.”

Other Canadians making the Most Beautiful list: fellow thespians Ryan Gosling, Tatiana Maslany, Jason Priestley, Elisha Cuthbert and Jessica Paré; musical talents Drake and Jann Arden; and TV personalities Rick Mercer, Sangita Patel and Jillian Harris.

The Most Beautiful Canadians issue of Hello! Canada hits newsstands on Friday.

DRUM MAJORS

Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith finally had their much-anticipated “drum-off.” On Thursday night’s edition of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the two men followed up on their fake Reddit feud as to which one was the better drummer. Wearing identical outfits (the pair already look like twins), Ferrell and Smith sat down at separate drum kits for the showdown in which they were allowed four drum solos apiece. Fallon declared Ferrell the winner after he brought out a cowbell to play along to the Blue Oyster Cult song Don’t Fear the Reaper. No plans for a rematch were announced.

PARTY MONSTER

A former guitar technician for the Canadian band Sum 41 has confirmed the hard-partying lifestyle of frontman Deryck Whibley. Earlier this week, Whibley admitted that he recently spent a month in hospital after his liver and kidney shut down following years of alcohol abuse. On his personal website, Whibley said that doctors told him that having just one more drink could kill him. On Thursday, Whibley’s former colleague Brian Keith Diaz, who toured with the band for nearly two years, called the singer a “functioning alcoholic,” and described life on the road as a “blur of Jack Daniels and vodka, s–y European cocaine and non-stop partying.” Diaz also recalled an incident from an Australian tour a few years back when Whibley was hospitalized for pneumonia. “Even after being in a hospital in Sydney, he was at the airport sipping wine at 9 a.m. as if nothing had happened.”

FAMILY TROUBLES

The husband of Disney Channel star Tiffany Thornton is claiming his wife has kidnapped their two young sons. Thornton’s husband, Chris Carney, filed a report with Los Angeles police this week claiming that the Sonny With a Chance star had abducted sons Kenneth and Bentley without his permission, and that his wife is suffering from postpartum depression. Bizarrely, Carney insisted that Thornton was assisted in the abduction by his own mother, Ruth Carney, who serves as mayor of Hot Springs, Ariz. Thornton’s rep told TMZ: “Mr. Carney’s claims are false and are being dealt with in the proper forum.”

BUMPY FLIGHT

Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett had a brief stay in jail this week after he was arrested for interfering with a police officer at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. According to reports, Jarrett, 59, was “belligerent and unco-operative” when officers responded to a call claiming he was drunk at an airport bar. Jarrett spent 12 hours in jail and was released on a $300 (U.S.) bond on Thursday morning. A Fox News spokesperson said in an e-mail statement: “He is dealing with serious personal issues at this time.”

ROLE-PLAYING

How deeply did Angelina Jolie go into character to play a fairy-tale villain in the upcoming feature Maleficent? Even Brad Pitt was worried. The actress recently admitted that her common-law spouse was concerned when she brought home the Disney villain’s magical staff and costume to rehearse for the role. “I was shouting at bushes, there was a lot going on,” she said on a British talk show. “I’m not sure what the neighbours thought, but Brad was worried for a period!”
