Where were you when you first heard about Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin splitting up?
The Oscar-winning actress and Coldplay frontman announced their separation yesterday in a statement posted on Paltrow’s Goop website. As expected with celebrity breakups, the statement, titled “Conscious Uncoupling,” said that Paltrow and Martin still care about each other a whole lot and plan on remaining supportive, loving parents to their two kids, Apple and Moses.
Less expected was the outpouring of snark, humour and creativity on social media that immediately followed news of the separation.
Creativity like: A Twitter user named Unnamed Insider posting an obviously photo-shopped shot of a smiling Martin pumping his fist at a Burger King with the caption, “Chris Martin bravely faces a life without Gwyneth Paltrow.”
Paltrow and Martin are vegans, as they never failed to remind us throughout their relationship, which fed into the following comment from a Tumblr user named My Sharona: “I bet as we speak Chris Martin is in McDonalds and ordering everything in sight.”
Which naturally led Twitter user Sam Lansky to post the comment, “ ‘You’ll never leave me, right?’ Gwyneth Paltrow whispers to a bowl of kale.”
As the Twitter account for the concert-ticket service Ticketline observed, “So Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow are splitting up. Very sad. Do you think this will make Coldplay worse or worse?”
Pointed out Katie Grainger: “I guess Gwyneth Paltrow finally got around to listening to Coldplay…”
And this from a Twitter user named Nana: “You know that period after a breakup where all you do is sit in the dark & listen to Coldplay albums? It sucks for Gwyneth Paltrow.”
Elsewhere, MSNBC personality Ronan Farrow observed, “Gwyneth Paltrow still knows more about flax oil than you.”
But mostly, people just had fun with the term “Conscious Uncoupling.”
Said Twitter user Rachel Harrison: “At first I thought Conscious Uncoupling was going to be the name announcement for their third child.”
And then there was this interesting observation from U.K. TV columnist Kevin O’Sullivan: “Question for enemy of the English language Gwyneth Paltrow: If two people fall in love at first sight, do they ‘unconsciously couple?’”
Well, Gwyneth?Report Typo/Error
