Now it can be told: Susan Sarandon had a secret relationship with David Bowie more than three decades ago.
In a far-ranging interview with The Daily Beast, the 67-year-old Oscar-winner reveals for the first time that she had an affair with the iconic rock star around the same time they co-starred in the 1983 vampire drama The Hunger.
And more than 30 years later, Sarandon still sounds smitten.
“He’s worth idolizing,” says Sarandon about Bowie in the interview. “He’s extraordinary. That was a really interesting period... Bowie’s just a really interesting person and so bright. He’s a talent, and a painter and…he’s great.”
For the record, Bowie, 67, has been married to the supermodel Iman since 1992. Sarandon split with her longtime boyfriend Tim Robbins in 2009 and is currently dating (she describes their relationship as a “work in progress”) her 36-year-old business partner Jonathan Bricklin.
In the same interview, Sarandon talks openly about her love of psychedelic drugs (“I’m not new to the idea of mushrooms”) and her admiration for Brad Pitt (“He’s a kind, thoughtful guy”), but seems less enamoured of Woody Allen.
“I have issues with Woody Allen,” says Sarandon. “He’s always had a reputation for being with younger girls—I mean younger girls. And also, that young woman [Soon-Yi] was very vulnerable, and I think it was very hard for the siblings, and certainly for Mia [Farrow]. You just don’t go there. You don’t go there.”
