The product

Garnier Skin Renew Dark Spot Treatment Mask

The promise

Combat dark spots, dehydration and dullness with this tissue mask, the first of its kind in the Canadian mass market. Touted as a 10-minute facial, each mask contains half a bottle of hydrating serum and is said to instantly plump and illuminate skin in just one application.

How it works

Vitamin C brightens the skin and delivers a boost of hydration that lasts for 24 hours. The breakthrough stretch-to-fit technology allows the mask to adhere to the contours of the face, providing an even distribution of product across the face.

How to use it

Cleanse and dry your skin, then gently unwrap the mask and place it on your face, adjusting around the eyes, nose and mouth for a comfortable fit. Remove it after 10 minutes and massage the remaining product into your skin.

The bottom line

As an ardent comic-book reader, I have always found masks to be fascinating accessories of deception, albeit unlikely ones. I mean, who does the Green Lantern think he’s fooling, anyway? Little did I know that I, too, would one day grow up to wear a mask – or, more accurately, any number of masks in all the colours of the rainbow that would harden on my skin and make me feel like Mister Freeze.

More often than not, the real battle commences when I have to take the mask off. And so it was in the name of the Beauty League (a little-known council of crusaders for beauty justice) that I put this mask to the test.

As a full-face material mask, this thing is more Rorschach than Robin, but it’s steeped in viscous ingredients that keep it in place so it doesn’t slosh around on your visage. It peels off easily and leaves a film of product that absorbs into the skin rapidly.

I was amazed by the boost of radiance it provided but even more pleased by how hydrating it is. I didn’t layer moisturizer over top and felt plumped all day long without a hint of dryness or tightness. You could say it came to my rescue.
