Odessa Paloma Parker shows you how to get 'natural,' carefree curls

Over the last few seasons, the "no-makeup" look has popped up on countless runways and been touted in numerous editorials. Recently the movement has travelled north to the top of the head, with brands from Burberry to Ellery flaunting natural, carefree curls on their catwalks. "It's amazing to see curly, or 'natural' hair being recognized in lookbooks, runways, magazines, et cetera," says Janet Jackson, a Toronto-based hairstylist who owns Jou Jou Hair Studio and has worked with clients including Iman and Rita Ora. "There has always been a misconception of 'good hair versus bad hair' – the idea of straight or wavy hair as good and tighter, kinky curls as bad. Now we are seeing a huge representation of all hair types in the media." But effort is required to look effortless, and starting with healthy hair is key. "It is important to know and understand your hair type," says Jackson. "You will then have a better understanding of what hair products you need to maintain your curly hair or afro." Jackson recommends a moisturizing sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to retain the hair's natural oils, as well as using essential oils – olive, coconut or argan – to hydrate during drier months. "Air drying your curls always gives an amazing result," she says. "But for those in a hurry or who simply have a lot of hair, a diffuser will do the trick." Just as important for letting your 'do do its thing is remembering to "stay away from products with alcohol," says Jackson. "This is what dries the hair out and makes your curls or afro frizzy." Forcing your hair to dry with a hooded or hand drier also creates frizz and shrinkage, she notes. With the use of a few key products, as well as regular trims, Jackson is excited to see more of us embrace this look. "Natural beauty has become more common and everyone is included."
