Make the most of flyaways with a grunge twist on a beachy do.
According to Toronto-based hairstylist Cody Alain, who created the hair looks shown on these pages, “you want it to be a bit dishevelled, so it works with humidity and frizz.”

Apply a volumizing cream to damp hair, concentrating the product on your roots. Blow-dry using a round brush to create lift at the base of the hair shaft. Once dry, twist various sections of hair around a wand or curling iron until you’ve achieved the desired volume; to avoid a uniform look, make sure the pieces are of varying widths and thicknesses. Lastly, set your waves with a texturizing spray to give them a touch of grit. “The contrast between polished and frizzy is what makes the look modern,” Alain says.

Embrace glistening skin for a strong, summery statement.

Use a cream with light-reflecting particles under a tinted moisturizer to even your skin tone, then, to achieve a deliberate sheen, blend a pearl- or champagne-coloured cream highlighter over your temples, upper cheekbones, bridge of the nose and Cupid’s bow. Finish with a light dusting of powder over the face and stow a hydrating mist in your purse for a midday refresher.

Take melted-looking eye makeup from sloppy to sultry.
“This [look] is about lived-in colour that’s a bit greasy but still looks elegant,” says Otis, who suggests using a blue and grey palette because it’s sultry, feminine and flattering to every skin tone. “The key is to blend and create soft shadows that gradually build intensity.”
