The question

I've seen stylish women match their blush to their outfit. Are there rules for doing this, or am I better off with a natural-looking tint on my cheeks?

The answer

This is one trend I can't get on board with, and here's why.

Blush (and makeup in general) is meant to accentuate your skin tone and facial features. Using a shade that corresponds to your outfit rather than one that complements your skin can have you looking quite dated. If you remember, the eighties called for a strong, war-paint-like strip of blush in a bright hue – and the look was anything but flattering.

Sticking to shades of coral is your best bet. The pinkish tone is universally flattering and can be found in light to deep shades, depending on your complexion. Consider Benefit's Cha Cha Tint, a liquid blush and lip stain, which I always have in my kit and use on myself almost every day for a long-lasting flush.

In short, cheeks are their most fetching with a natural-looking glow, so stick to what looks good on you instead of what matches your sweater.
