Having been fetishized by everything from Gossip Girl to Japanese anime, the schoolgirl uniform has finally graduated into ready-to-wear territory. Recent interpretations of the classic kilt offer the chance to relive those high-school glory days, but in a decidedly more grown-up style. Making it appropriate for the office, however, requires some education.

1. The look this season is less innocent than it is edgy, so refrain from looking too literally schoolgirl (over-the-knee socks here are a big no-no) by taking cue from Proenza Schouler's dark, moody take on prep (above left). Opt for full-coverage tights, a collared blouse and a sharp jacket in black or navy.

2. No ties required: Instead, button that collar all the way up or, for a more modern take, go with a soft, silk-bowed blouse. And no tying it at your midriff à la Britney Spears.

3. Even GG's Blair Waldorf ditched her signature headbands when she graduated from her boarding school duds, so keep your hair and makeup sophisticated and age-appropriate. Nobody over the age of 13 should be wearing pigtails anyway.
