Floor-skimming hemlines once dominated red-carpet galas and the wardrobes of certain religious groups (think Big Love). Within the past few seasons, however, maxi skirts have ruled both catwalks and cubicles, providing a welcome reprieve from those scandalous minis Julia Roberts popularized in Erin Brockovich. Needless to say, the key to wearing long lengths to the office is a short story.

1. There's a lot of pleasure to be derived from Sister Wives, but none from dressing like the show's stars. In other words, tone down the stuffiness by showing a little skin. A (not too) plunging neckline like at MaxMara does the trick. If you're wearing a button-up blouse, leave a few buttons undone.

2. You're not going to the Oscars, so leave fancy fabrications like tulle and satin at home. Ditto with volume. Opt for slinkier, form-fitting jerseys or knits to play down the formality.

3. Add some height with heeled shoes to keep the overall silhouette long and lean. And if you're feeling a bit like a racy Victorian, opt for a flash of ankle with a little bootie. Cheeky!
