We’ve come a long way since Ally McBeal, the nineties’ favourite dysfunctional lawyer, made headlines with her thigh-grazing hemlines. Thankfully, designers aren’t looking back. This season, the skirt’s sweet spot continues its slide south with midi-length numbers that stop just above the ankles. And you don’t have to be a prude or a law professional to wear them.
Leave those flouncy flower-child skirts to the hippies. At the office, you want to look crisp and professional, so opt for something that’s tailored close to the body. This is also especially flattering if you are petite.
This particular length can skew awkward if you don’t play it right. Your main goal is to elongate, so take a tip from Roland Mouret’s runway presentation and wear monochrome head-to-toe.
The longer you go, especially with a slim skirt, the stronger the case for tucking that blouse in. This will, again, serve to elongate and flatter your silhouette, drawing attention to your natural waist as opposed to everything else. And don’t be afraid to sex things up with heels, which in this day and age go much further than McBeal and her hemlines.
