Shimmer at work with office-appropriate sequins

From Saturday's Globe and Mail

Sequins are no longer just for evening wear (or wannabe Krystle Carringtons). This season, they shine brighter and more widely than ever, on everything from sensible pencil skirts to cardigans, T-shirts and tanks. Yes, they can even be suitable for the office, where incorporating a dash of unexpected glitter doesn’t have to be as dramatic as an Alexis Colby board meeting.

1. If you were to pick one sequin piece to rock deskside, opt for a crew-cut tank. Depending on your workplace, an embellished skirt may be too formal. A tank, however, can be mixed in with tailored trousers or a skirt and topped with a soft knit or wool jacket to make it appropriate for all offices.

2. Take a cue from Marc Jacobs’s fall 2011 runway presentation and stick to a monochromatic palette to dim the sparkle of those sequins. Black may usually read evening, but here it plays it safe and subtle.

3. Add a substantial structured bag and business-minded booties over a small clutch and formal footwear – and keep those accessories minimal. This will ensure that you’re in step with office dress codes and not ones more appropriate for nightclubs.
