Shorts at work? Here's how to pull it off Add to ...

Shorts are the miniskirt's controversial cousin: too casual for the workplace and, well, potentially inappropriate altogether. But with the surfeit of styles offered up on runways this season, the options just got better. Here's how to do it right.

1. Who wears short shorts? To the office - nobody. As with skirts, the just-above-the-knee rule is always in effect. Opt for fuller or slightly tailored Bermuda styles instead of something thigh-skimming.

2. Keep the Daisy Dukes for the weekend or, more wisely, hidden in the trunk of a 1969 Dodge Charger. For work, you'll want to pick office-appropriate suiting fabrics, including brushed cotton, light wool or a linen blend.

3. Take a cue from Phillip Lim (above left) and pair those shorts with a jacket. Doing so immediately takes them out of their weekend context and into something more polished.
