On Nov. 15, the 35th annual National Business for the Arts awards gala was held at The Carlu, where Gary Slaight and Stephen Delaney stole the spotlight for their contributions to the arts. Mr. Slaight, who took home the 2013 Edmund C. Bovey Award, has been a long-time supporter of Canadian musicians and actors as well as an advocate of arts education. Mr. Delaney won the Arnold Edinborough Award for his countless efforts in the dance community and his work with the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Ballet School. The evening was hosted by singer-songwriter Molly Johnson and featured a performance by the National Ballet of Canada as well as an interview between Jian Ghomeshi and Mr. Slaight, who was rumoured to be too shy to make a solo speech. After the swank three-course dinner, guests made their way to The Carlu’s oval room where the official Arnold afterparty kicked off which was, for the first time, themed “all things New Orleans.” Performances continued by Toronto vocalist Saidah Baba Talibah and jazz artist Vincent Bertucci, a live art installation by painter Sarah Cannon and projectionist Fezz Stenton of Young Offenders, and a contemporary dance installation by Shannon Litzenberger’s Everyday Marvels. Business for the Arts is an organization dedicated to connecting arts associations with businesses, volunteers and ambassadors in an effort to strengthen art and culture in Canada. parties@globeandmail.com
