The Toronto Raptors wore their philanthropic hats last Thursday night at a star-studded benefit to honour Nelson Mandela. Team president and general manager Masai Ujiri, along with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, hosted the event that brought out local athletes DeMar DeRozan, Kyle Lowry and Amir Johnson as well as actor Danny Glover and NBA legend Dikembe Mutombo, who was recognized for his lifelong contributions to peace and prosperity in Africa. The evening featured a collection of performances that celebrated the life and legacy of the former president of South Africa, including songs by Aloe Blacc and Lorraine Klassen. In total, the evening raised more than $325,000 for the Giants of Africa and Nelson Mandela Foundation. parties@globeandmail.com
