The question
My husband is thrilled that I have started carrying a purse. It's a small Kate Spade bag that I like to carry over my shoulder. He says I should hold the strap in the crook of my arm, but I think that is passé. What do you think?

So you mean to say you have never carried a purse until now? Best case scenario: You used a messenger bag. Worst: a fanny pack. I'd rather not know. In any event, Kate Spade is a great gateway brand to get you enthused about accessories. Here's what will settle your debate: They're called shoulder bags or handbags – not crook bags. (Actually, that's a good name for all the designer knockoffs.)
While I take less issue with the handle resting on the forearm, on the crook is nearly as loathsome as visible gum-chewing. When I see women doing this, especially when their bags are huge and obnoxiously branded, I can only conclude that they are emulating Paris Hilton.
Although you're new to the purse world, it's still best not to look nouveau riche.
