VEGSTOCK
Taste of Health, Western Canada's largest vegetarian food festival, invites you to rub carrot sticks with raw food enthusiasts, local restaurateurs and meat abstainers of all stripes at the 10th anniversary edition this weekend. Friday night's gala at the Croatian Cultural Centre (3250 Commercial Dr.) will feature the cooking of Isa Chandra Moskowitz (author of Veganomicon), a presentation from Howard Lyman (the "mad cowboy" cattle rancher turned vegan activist) and a sampling of vegan wines (yes, they do exist) from the Okanagan Valley's Blasted Church Vineyards. Tickets and information: tasteofhealth.earthsave.ca; 604-731-5885.
NEW FINEST AT SEA LOCALE
This little fishy finally went to market. After many months of delay, Finest at Sea seafood boutique has opened its second Vancouver location, on Granville Island next to the Lobster Man. The new shop is selling a wide range of local sustainable seafood that comes straight from the merchant's own fleet of fishing boats. Alas, there is no café serving fresh and chips: 1805 Mast Tower Rd.; 604-684-4114.
COOKING CLASS IN SESSION
Les Faux Bourgeois has barely had time to let the seasoning sink into its Le Creuset stoneware and the consulting chef is already spilling the beans on classic French bistro fare at this new East Vancouver restaurant. Well, Tina Fineza will probably be stirring those beans into a hearty cassoulet when she teaches a one-night cooking class, FoBo Table d'Hôte, at the Quince studio in Kitsilano on Oct. 27. Ms. Fineza will also be whipping up a quickie three-hour course on Sept. 29 that flips the lid on her modern Asian street food from the Flying Tiger restaurant. Quince: 1780 West 3rd Ave.; 604 731 4645.
