Auchentoshan distinguishes itself from other single-malt houses by distilling three times, not twice. The result, in theory and arguably here in practice, is added smoothness. The nose has the characteristic leafy quality of Auchentoshan along with dried fruit and cereal. On the palate, it bursts forth with such malty sweetness that you might be tempted to pour it with dessert. Then the gingery spice and subtly smoky peat arrive, reminding you this is fine Lowland Scotch. Texture is the special pleasure here, all caramel-smooth. A good value.
