Great Lakes Miami Weiss Wheat Ale, Ontario Add to ...

  • Rating 91
  • Region Ontario
  • Price $5.95/650 ml

Tsk, tsk. Weissbier – German for “white beer” – is made with a large proportion of wheat. The double entendre in this brand’s name, riffing off the old TV show Miami Vice, is reinforced by the attractive, art-deco-style blue label that evokes South Beach architecture. Wheat ales tend to be cloudy because they’re unfiltered. This one’s only slightly hazy and the classic clove-like spiciness comes through in a relatively subtle way. What I love is the unexpected jolt of bitterness – so robust for a wheat beer. And there’s a pleasantly earthy finish. Lots of flavour for a 4.5-per-cent alcohol brew.
