wine review

Perhaps you've just turned 21, or will turn 50 next year. Here's a fine limited-edition whisky to commemorate either anniversary. It's aged 20 years in the standard American-white-oak casks used for Scotch, then "finished" for a year in oloroso sherry casks that once held fortified wine from the 1963 vintage in Spain. That sherry-soaked wood imparts a nutty character and overtones of fruit. But the extended time in wood never overpowers the underlying cereal essence. The 1963 wood was chosen in homage to the distillery's reconstruction after a long period of disrepair. Bottled in 2010, this 21-year-old also commemorates Jura's 200th anniversary as the lone distillery on its namesake western island (one pub, one road and 200 inhabitants). Don't wait for your 200th birthday to try it. Available in Ontario.
