pick of the week

Premixed drinks tend not to be my thing. This one's different, mainly because it's not as sweet as I had expected. There's another reason: It's meant to be served warm, and that's where it shines. At just 15-per-cent alcohol, it's a blend of Jack Daniel's whisky with apple juice, sweetener, cinnamon, cloves and a few other ingredients. Served at room temperature, it's a bit cloying and not strong enough to balance the sweetness, I think. On the other hand, simmered on the stove or, more conveniently, zapped by the mugful in the microwave, it settles into a sort of mulled apple-cider beverage or Calvados-based hot toddy. I appreciate the balance: baked apple, not too much cinnamon, a whisper of oaky spirit below. Good going, Jack; $23.99 in B.C., $23.99 in Saskatchewan, $20.99 in Manitoba, $23.95 in Quebec.
