This regal white is part of a line that includes The King's Wrath Pinot Noir and The King's Bastard Chardonnay. The monarch here is England's King John, a 13th-century contemporary of William de Marisco, an ancestor of winery-owner Brent Marris. De Marisco, a pirate, was, among other things, oddly given the honour by King John of commanding several royal galleys off England's coast to defend against … pirates! Some favour. This is classic and well-balanced, dry Marlborough sauvignon blanc, with a cannon-blast of grapefruit, lychee and kiwi followed by tangy, smouldering herbs.
