A Tuscan red from an estate better known for its high-end Brunello di Montalcino, I Piaggioni might be considered a baby brother to that wine, similarly made from sangiovese. Lighter and fresher, though still ample-bodied, it comes across with juicy blackberry and blueberry fruit infused with tobacco and well-worn leather. Designed for earlier consumption than the Brunello, it shows sticky tannins that nonetheless bode well for up to five years in the cellar. Available in Ontario.
