wine review

The "Eh" represents a dollop of Canadian humour, as one might gather from the red maple leaf on the label of this offering from a serious-minded Vancouver Island producer. This is 100-per-cent maréchal foch, a cold-hardy red variety that played a big role in the early days of quality Canadian wine, more commonly referred to in these parts simply as foch. I don't think I've ever come across a more accurate back-label description, so let's paraphrase: unoaked, uncomplicated, fabulously fruity, grape jelly, strawberry licorice, bubblegum. Way to go, Averill Creek. Great choice for burgers or grilled sausages on a bun. I might uncork another bottle while watching federal election-night coverage 2015. Available direct from the winery: averillcreek.ca.
